Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Trooper is a medium-frame, double-action revolver with a six-round cylinder, offered in .22 Long Rifle, .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, .38 Special, and .357 Magnum. Introduced as a more affordable alternative to the upscale Colt .357, and later the Python and King Cobra, the Trooper was marketed to both law enforcement agencies and civilian shooters. By the late 1960s, rising labor costs and Colt’s traditional manufacturing methods had driven prices up, eroding the company’s market share. In response, Colt launched the MK III series in 1969—its first major revolver redesign since the early 20th century. Built on the new “J” frame with no parts interchangeability with earlier models, the MK IIIs featured a modern transfer-bar lockwork system, ensuring the revolver could only fire with a full, deliberate trigger pull. The redesigned internals used coiled stainless-steel springs in place of older flat springs, improving durability and corrosion resistance.

The .357 Magnum Trooper was the flagship of this new line, equipped with a heavy barrel, solid top rib, and a shrouded ejector rod. For the first time, the Trooper was also offered in .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire. Alongside it, Colt introduced updated classics like the Official Police in .38 Special as an entry-level option, as well as new models including the Lawman, Metropolitan Police, and Border Patrol. Despite its innovations, the MK III series was ultimately phased out in 1983.
