The Colt Woodsman is a semi-automatic sporting pistol produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company in the United States from 1915 to 1977. Originally designed by the legendary John Moses Browning, the Woodsman evolved through three distinct design generations: the first series from 1915 to 1941, the second from 1947 to 1955, and the third from 1955 to 1977.
Browning’s design for the Woodsman emphasized simplicity and precision, omitting features like a grip safety and external hammer that were present on his military pistols such as the Model 1903 and 1911. These changes were well-suited for a pistol intended primarily for target shooting. Each of the three Woodsman series included three main variants: the Target, Sport, and Match Target models. The Target Model served as the standard version, equipped with a 6-inch barrel and adjustable front and rear sights. In 1955, Colt updated the Woodsman’s design by modifying details like the sights, markings, and grips. The most notable change was moving the magazine release back to the heel of the grip, as seen in the original series. Starting in 1960, Colt also offered optional walnut thumbrest stocks in place of the standard black plastic grips.
