Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Crescent Firearms Company “American Gun Co.” side-by-side hammer, break-action shotgun—produced under the trade name of H. & D. Folsom Arms Company—represents a classic example of late 19th and early 20th-century American shotgun craftsmanship. Built to provide rugged reliability and straightforward operation, these shotguns feature two barrels aligned horizontally with individual external hammers, each requiring manual cocking before firing. The break-action design allows the barrels to pivot downward for loading and unloading, giving shooters immediate access to the chamber and a clear visual confirmation of the gun’s status, enhancing both safety and usability. Typically chambered in common gauges such as 12 or 20, these shotguns were finished with blued steel barrels and receivers, paired with walnut or similar hardwood stocks that were often smooth or lightly checkered. The hammer design, though slower than modern hammerless actions, provided a mechanically simple, robust firing system that could withstand hard use in hunting or field environments, while the side-by-side barrel configuration offered a wide shot pattern for close-range upland game or bird hunting. In practical terms, the Crescent Firearms/American Gun Co. side-by-side hammer shotgun excelled as a dependable field firearm for hunters and sportsmen who valued simplicity and reliability over modern speed or high-capacity features. The individual hammers allowed selective firing from either barrel, which could be advantageous when varying loads or chokes were used, and the break-action construction simplified maintenance, cleaning, and inspection of the gun’s critical components. While the design limits rapid follow-up shots compared with pump-action or autoloading shotguns, its mechanical transparency and low likelihood of malfunction made it a practical choice for daily hunting use. Collectors and historians also prize these firearms for their historical significance and as representative artifacts of early American arms manufacturing. The association with Crescent Firearms Company and the trade-name use by H. & D. Folsom Arms reflects a period when smaller regional manufacturers supplied hunters and sportsmen with quality, accessible firearms, combining durability, usability, and classic aesthetic appeal in a single, historically notable package.
