The Cugir WASR-10 is a Romanian-made semi-automatic rifle based on the Soviet AKM design, produced by the Cugir Arms Factory in Romania. Its origins trace back to the Pistol Mitraliera model 1963/1965 (PM md. 63), which was Romania's adaptation of the Soviet AKM. In the late 1990s, Romania began exporting semi-automatic variants of the PM md. 63 to the United States to comply with U.S. import regulations, which restricted the importation of military-style firearms. These rifles were initially manufactured with single-stack magazine wells and 10-round magazines to meet the legal requirements. Upon importation, U.S. companies like Century Arms modified these rifles to accept standard double-stack magazines, replacing certain parts to comply with U.S. laws, such as the addition of U.S.-made compliance parts. This process resulted in the WASR-10, a civilian-legal version of the AKM-style rifle, chambered in 7.62×39mm.
