The CZ 99 is a full-size service handgun developed in the late 1980s by the Yugoslav firearms manufacturer Zastava Arms and designed to meet the needs of military and law-enforcement forces for a modern double-action pistol. Despite its name, the CZ 99 is not produced by the Czech company Ceská zbrojovka but instead represents Yugoslavia’s own domestic pistol design, though it clearly draws inspiration from well-known Western handguns such as the SIG Sauer P226 and the Walther P88. Chambered primarily in 9×19mm Parabellum, the pistol uses a short-recoil, locked-breech operating system based on the Browning tilting-barrel principle and feeds from a double-stack detachable magazine typically holding 15 rounds. The CZ 99 features a robust steel slide paired with an aluminum alloy frame, giving it a solid but manageable weight and making it suitable for service carry. One of the pistol’s distinctive characteristics is its combination safety and decocking lever system, which allows the hammer to be safely lowered while also providing a manual safety option. In addition, the design includes a loaded-chamber indicator and an ambidextrous magazine release located at the rear of the trigger guard, features intended to enhance both safety and usability. The pistol generally incorporates fixed combat sights and a comfortable grip shape that accommodates the double-stack magazine while still maintaining good ergonomics.

Over time, the CZ 99 served as the foundation for several improved or derivative models produced by Zastava, including the CZ 999 and other updated variants.
