Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this highly sought-after double-action revolver for a penny-start auction; this is the Dan Wesson 445VS!

According to a letter that was sent to us by the owner from The Gates Family, Elgin T. Gates, President, and IHMSA (International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association), Incorporated

"ETG445B022 Dan Wesson Supermag

Elgin T. Gates, President of IHMSA for ten years, was driven to design, develop, and produce cartridges and Handguns for the Hunting and Silhouette shooting world. His quest started at an early age, as a young man back in the 1930s, wanting to improve calibers and ballistics.

As the International Hand Gun Metallic Silhouette Association became popular in 1976, the need to produce quality handguns was my father's top priority. The 49 thousand members of IHMSA were always looking for innovative calibers, handguns, and shooting accessories. Elgin worked with Smith and Wesson, Remington and Dan Wesson Arms, and others, asking them to manufacture a long cylinder revolver for his Supermag Cases. Smith and Wesson had no interest back in 1980, so Elgin, knowing Remington and Dan Wesson, who was very innovative, asked them to start with the 357 Supermag, 375, 414, and 445. His original 505 or "50" and 610 Supermags were never mass-produced as planned. Dan Wesson Arms produced the Supermags for Elgin, who passed in 1988.

The Dan Wesson "Special Edition Guns" were produced for the International Hand Gun Silhouette Origination. IHMSA and ETG (Elgin T. Gates) versions were made in 22 single action, 357, 414, and 445 Supermags, and 44 magnums were also made. Other Gun Companies also produced Special Editions of IHMSA models of their own "brand" of Handguns, revolvers, and Bolt handguns for IHMSA Members to purchase, including the Remington Max. Some of these guns ended up in Elgin's personal collection."

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Dan Wesson 445VS is a revolver chambered for the .445 SuperMag cartridge, which is part of the "SuperMag" family of handgun rounds. These SuperMag cartridges were developed in the 1970s by Elgin Gates to provide more power and velocity than standard magnum rounds. Unlike typical magnum cartridges such as the .357 Magnum or the .44 Magnum, the SuperMag rounds are longer, measuring 1.610 inches, which allows for increased powder capacity. This added powder results in significantly higher muzzle velocities, enhancing performance for long-range shooting. The .445 SuperMag, based on the .44 Magnum, offers superior velocity, driving a 300-grain bullet up to 120 feet per second faster than its .44 Magnum counterpart. This increased velocity makes the .445 SuperMag especially useful for long-range hunting and silhouette shooting, with a knockdown power effective up to 200 yards for silhouette shooting and 150 yards for hunting.

The .445 SuperMag cartridge, known for its power and versatility, has been particularly popular with hunters and target shooters due to its ability to deliver higher velocities and greater accuracy at extended ranges. The Dan Wesson 445VS revolver, designed to handle this potent round, is known for its robust construction and precision engineering. It is capable of shooting not only the powerful .445 SuperMag but also the shorter .44 Magnum, .44 Special, and .44 Russian cartridges, making it a versatile choice for those who want a firearm capable of handling multiple rounds. While the .445 SuperMag was initially produced in revolvers like the Dan Wesson 445VS, the demand for such high-powered revolvers waned over time, and Dan Wesson ceased production of the .445 SuperMag revolver in 2007. However, the cartridge’s legacy remains, with custom ammunition providers like Buffalo Bore continuing to offer loaded rounds for enthusiasts.

Despite the end of production for Dan Wesson's .445 SuperMag revolvers, the cartridge still holds a niche in the world of custom firearms and ammunition. Starline Brass continues to supply brass for handloaders, and custom barrel manufacturers occasionally offer barrels for platforms like the T/C Encore. This continued support ensures that the .445 SuperMag remains available for those who appreciate its power and performance. Although the Dan Wesson 445VS revolver itself may no longer be in production, its legacy as a powerful and accurate firearm lives on, with the .445 SuperMag remaining a significant round in the history of high-performance handguns.
