Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The most famous and easily recognized revolver manufactured by Eli Whitney, Jr. was his Navy Model, which emerged just before the War Between the States. An improved Second Model was introduced as the war began, and sales increased as Whitney actively marketed his revolver. Chambered in .36 caliber with a standard barrel length of 7 5/8 inches, the term “Navy” referred to its caliber and size rather than exclusive naval use, and these revolvers were purchased by both the U.S. Army and Navy. Approximately 35,500 Whitney Navy revolvers were produced, including about 1,500 First Models and roughly 34,000 Second Models, each undergoing minor improvements that resulted in four “types” of the First Model and five “types” of the Second Model. Whitney decorated his cylinders with a distinctive scene: a shield split between the U.S. Stars & Stripes and the English Coat of Arms, flanked by an American eagle and England’s Trafalgar lion, duplicated on the opposite side; later, one side was replaced with a naval scene featuring an American shield with a ribbon inscribed “Whitneyville.”

In 1862, Whitney secured a contract with the U.S. Army, delivering about 7,602 revolvers through 1863, and the Army obtained additional revolvers through private vendors, resulting in over 10,000 Whitney Navy revolvers in Army service. The U.S. Navy purchased 6,226 revolvers between 1863 and 1865, meaning roughly half of the Second Model production went to military service, cementing the Whitney Navy revolver as a significant and innovative firearm of the mid-19th century.
