An Essex Arms 1911 began not as a complete factory pistol but as a value-priced, aftermarket route to building one. Founded in Island Pond, Vermont (later operating in Hardwick), Essex Arms produced investment-cast 1911 frames — and occasionally slides — beginning in the mid-1970s, selling affordable components to gunsmiths, assemblers, and hobbyists rather than marketing large numbers of finished pistols. Their frames, made from conventional 1911 steels and offered at low cost, encouraged builders to pair Essex frames with surplus, Colt, or aftermarket slides and parts. Although Essex primarily supplied parts, some third parties assembled and sold finished pistols using Essex components. As a result, Essex-based guns—used by small makers and custom shops alike—display widely varying levels of quality and an eclectic mix of finishes, sights, grips, barrels, and other custom work, since each build reflected the parts available and the assembler’s skill rather than a single factory standard.
