The Remington U.S. Model 1863 percussion rifled-musket, commonly referred to as the “Zouave”, was produced by the Remington Arms Company between 1862 and 1865 under contract with the U.S. government. Approximately 12,500 of these rifles were manufactured. While the rifle is frequently linked to the brightly uniformed, French-influenced Zouave regiments of the Civil War, there is little definitive evidence to suggest it was widely issued to them in combat.
