Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The FEG (Fegyver-és Gépgyár) SLP-1 is a rather curious and uncommon semi-automatic pistol with a backstory that reflects both Cold War era firearms marketing and Hungarian small arms design of the late 1960s. Despite often being marketed and marked as a “Mauser Oberaudorf” SLP-1 — a label intended to evoke the famous German arms maker — the pistol was actually manufactured in Hungary by FEG and imported with roll marks and packaging that could mislead buyers into thinking it was of West German origin, a strategy that seems to have been part of its commercial appeal. The designation SLP-1 stands for “Selbstlade Pistole 1” (German for “self-loading pistol”), and it was chambered in .32 ACP, a common European defensive cartridge of the period, fed from a detachable box magazine with plastic grips that came in military checker or competition thumb style. Mechanically, the SLP-1 resembles the family of PP/PPK-style blowback pistols popular in mid-20th-century Europe — simple, straight-blowback designs with a fixed barrel and slide reciprocation — and in terms of lineage it sits somewhere between earlier Hungarian PP-derived designs (like the AP-66) and later Eastern Bloc service pistols (such as the PA-63). Production of the SLP-1 was short-lived, ceasing in the late 1960s or about 1970, and because it was rarely marked “Made in Hungary,” original examples today attract interest from collectors precisely because of their unusual branding, obscure provenance, and position as a lesser-known entry in the post-war European pocket pistol marke
