Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Frommer Stop is a uniquely engineered semi-automatic pistol developed in Hungary by the small arms manufacturer Fegyver és Gépgyár (FÉG) during the early 20th century. Designed by prolific Hungarian firearms inventor Rudolf Frommer, the pistol was finalized in 1912 and entered service in 1914, just before the outbreak of World War I. What makes the Frommer Stop particularly distinct is its long-recoil operation system, a mechanism rarely used in pistols, where both the barrel and bolt recoil together before separating to cycle the next round. This design, more commonly seen in rifles or shotguns, gave the pistol an unusual internal layout and elongated frame. Chambered primarily in 7.65mm (.32 ACP) and later in .380 ACP, the pistol was intended for military officers and police use, offering a relatively high rate of fire and low felt recoil due to its unique action. The weapon also featured a fixed barrel and an 8-round internal magazine, which was fed from the bottom via a detachable magazine—standard for semi-automatics of the era. The Frommer Stop saw extensive service with the Austro-Hungarian military during World War I, where it was issued largely to officers, non-commissioned officers, and specialized units such as machine gun crews. Its service continued well into the interwar period and even into World War II, used by both Hungarian forces and various police units. Despite its innovative design, the Frommer Stop faced practical drawbacks: the long-recoil system, while technically fascinating, added mechanical complexity without offering significant advantages over simpler blowback designs common at the time. Its caliber—especially the 7.65mm version—was also relatively underpowered by modern standards, and the design lacked interchangeable parts with other allied weapons, complicating logistics. Nonetheless, the Frommer Stop stands as a testament to early 20th-century firearms experimentation and Hungarian ingenuity, marking FÉG as a capable and forward-thinking arms manufacturer in the European arms industry. Today, the pistol is a valued collector’s piece, admired for its engineering, historical service, and distinctive silhouette.
