Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The FÉG Mark II APK is a Hungarian-made semi-automatic pistol imported into the United States by Interarms during the late Cold War and immediate post–Cold War period, reflecting a unique convergence of Eastern European manufacturing and Western commercial demand. As Interarms sought alternatives to the Walther PP and PPK platforms in the late 1980s and 1990s, it turned to Fegyver- és Gépgyár (FÉG), a long-established Hungarian industrial firm with firearms roots dating back to the 1890s. The APK was FÉG’s compact, Walther-inspired offering, closely mirroring the PP/PPK operating system while benefiting from relaxed trade restrictions that allowed Eastern Bloc manufacturers to enter U.S. markets. Chambered in calibers such as .380 ACP and .22 LR, the APK employed a fixed-barrel, blowback design with double-action/single-action operation, an exposed hammer, and a slide-mounted safety/decocker, making it immediately familiar to shooters accustomed to classic European service pistols.

The Mark II APK distinguished itself through thoughtful ergonomic updates not present on the original Walther designs, most notably an extended backstrap and beavertail that significantly reduced the risk of slide bite. It also featured a conventional push-button magazine release and a subtle disassembly aid built into the trigger guard, improving user friendliness. While the all-steel construction made the pistol heavier than many competitors, it contributed to durability and controllability. Though generally reliable and well-engineered, the APK did not match Walther’s level of fit, finish, or cosmetic refinement, particularly in later examples marked with dot-matrix engraving. Nevertheless, its affordability and practical improvements made it an appealing alternative, and today the FÉG Mark II APK is recognized as an important and representative example of Cold War–era handgun design adapted for Western commercial markets.
