Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The FÉG P9R, marketed under several names, is a full-size 9mm double-action/single-action semi-automatic pistol manufactured in Hungary by Fegyver- és Gázkészülékgyár (FÉG) from the early 1980s through around 2000. Part of FÉG’s P9 family, it represents a modernized evolution of the earlier FP9 design, influenced by Browning short-recoil locking principles but mechanically closer to a Smith & Wesson–style DA/SA trigger system, built on a robust locked-breech steel-frame platform with a double-stack magazine. The P9R features a slide-mounted safety/decocker that lowers the hammer, blocks the firing pin, and allows safe carry with a chambered round, reflecting FÉG’s adoption of contemporary service-pistol safety standards. Typically marked on the slide “P9R Cal. 9mm Parabellum Made by FEG Hungary,” it was adopted by the Hungarian Police in 1993 and later partially replaced by the IMI Jericho before being phased out in favor of the HK USP after 2000. In Western markets, the P9R was sold under various names, including Mauser 90DA, Luger M90, Kettner M90, and in the United States as the MBK-9HP by K.B.I. Though never widely marketed and with limited factory documentation, the P9R and its branded variants are regarded by collectors as uncommon Eastern European export pistols, prized for their robust construction and their role in FÉG’s evolution toward modern 9mm service-style handguns.
