The FN 140DA is a compact, elegant DA/SA semi-automatic pistol that traces its roots to the Beretta Model 81/84 family but wears FN’s and Browning’s badges depending on the market. Mechanically, it is a short-recoil design with a closed slide and conventional ejection port; the action is double-action for the first shot and single-action for follow-ups, giving a longer, heavier first pull for safe carry and a lighter, crisper second pull for accurate follow-ups. FN offered it in both .32 ACP (for European markets where 9×17 restrictions applied at the time) and .380 ACP; the .380 was marketed in North America as the Browning BDA 380. The pistol’s frame is cast/molded from aircraft-grade aluminum to save weight, while the bolt/slide is machined from solid steel for durability and a pleasing visual heft. A number of components are interchangeable with the Beretta 81/84 series—barrel, some internal parts, and magazines—so the design blends FN/Browning finish and trim with proven Beretta mechanical lineage.
