Here we present a C&R Fabrique Nationale Colombian Contract Model 1950 Mauser Pattern Rifle, manufactured by FN Herstal in the 1950s. This rifle is part of Colombia's long history of Mauser rifle usage, which stretches back to the late 19th century. The Mauser has been a central firearm for the Colombian military, with at least eight different Mauser models seeing service from 1891 well into the 1950s. The customizations requested by the Colombian government from their suppliers—German, Austrian, and Belgian—reflect the rifle's adaptation to the challenging South American jungles and harsh climates. Colombia's tumultuous political history further shaped its reliance on such dependable firearms. By 1858, just a year before Paul Mauser began his work at the royal factory in Europe, Colombia had already established itself as a federal republic. Over the years, Colombia was plagued by a series of violent civil wars, including the devastating Thousand Days' War (1899–1902) between the Conservatives and Liberals, and the La Violencia period (1946–1958), which saw another bloody civil conflict.
