Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The FN Model 1922 is a handsome, compact service pistol developed by Fabrique Nationale as a beefed-up evolution of John Browning’s earlier Model 1910—essentially a lengthened, strengthened 1910 tailored for military and police contracts, and offered in the two Browning rimfire/civil calibers of the era (.32 ACP/7.65×17 and .380 ACP/9×17 Browning Short). Mechanically it is a simple blowback-operated, striker/hammer-inside design that preserves Browning’s efficient layout (including the recoil-spring-around-the-barrel arrangement) while adding a longer slide and grip to increase sight radius, control, and magazine capacity—early wartime and interwar examples pushed the barrel out to about 4.4–4.5 inches and increased magazines to roughly nine rounds in .32 and eight in .380 on many production runs. FN built the 1922 in large numbers for police and military users across Europe (Belgium, Yugoslavia, Greece, the Netherlands, Turkey, etc.), and large quantities were produced even during the German occupation in World War II (where captured/contract examples were issued the Wehrmacht designations and stamped accordingly). In practice the M1922 earned a reputation for thin-slab, art-deco styling, dependable function, and good accuracy for its size—the extra length over the 1910 made it a more sensible duty pistol while retaining the slim, easy-carry dimensions that had made Browning’s compact designs so popular. Collectors and shooters today prize the M1922 for its historical pedigree, solid FN workmanship, and the variety of wartime and postwar markings that tell the story of interwar Europe and occupation-era production, and many examples remain serviceable and enjoyable shooters when matched with appropriate .32 or .380 ammunition.
