Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Forehand & Wadsworth “British Bull-Dog” is an American-made interpretation of the famous late-19th-century pocket revolver originally devised by Philip Webley in Birmingham—a compact, stout little self-defense gun built for deep concealment and close-range effectiveness. Characteristically the Bull-Dog pattern features a short (roughly 2½?) barrel, a solid (non-break) frame with an exposed hammer and conventional loading gate plus an under-barrel ejector rod, and a small, rounded grip that tucks comfortably into a coat or vest pocket, all of which combine to make the design easy to carry and quick to present in an emergency. Forehand & Wadsworth—one of several Continental and American makers who copied the Webley layout—produced numerous Bulldog-pattern revolvers in the late 1800s and into the early 20th century, often chambered for popular contemporary cartridges (American runs are frequently found in .44 Bull Dog/.44 S&W American or in the parent .442 Webley/.450 Adams types), and commonly finished in nickel plate to resist corrosion and catch the eye of civilian buyers. Functionally the little Forehand Bulldogs were built to be rugged and simple rather than refined: the double-action mechanism (with the option to cock and fire single action), short sight radius, and stout construction made them effective at very short defensive ranges while the limited capacity and light cartridges meant recoil was manageable in such a compact package. Today Forehand Bulldogs are collected both as examples of the wildly popular Bulldog pattern and as artifacts of America’s flourishing late-Victorian small-arms industry—their value depends on condition, caliber and finish, but well-preserved Forehand examples remain appealing to collectors who like pocket revolvers and the story of transatlantic gun design diffusion in the 19th century. This Example is not functional.
