Freedom Arms was founded in 1978 by Wayne Baker and Dick Casull, with Casull’s decades-long experimentation leading to the development of the .454 Casull cartridge as a more powerful evolution of the .45 Colt and .44 Magnum. Introduced commercially in 1983, the Model 83 became the first production revolver chambered for this formidable round. In addition to standard configurations, rare short-barreled variants such as the “Marshall” and “Packer” models were produced without ejector rods, resulting in symmetrical frames and extremely limited production numbers. Today, the Model 83 is widely respected among collectors and handgun hunters alike as a landmark revolver that blends innovation, raw power, and refined craftsmanship into a single platform.
