The H&R Model 176 Magnum Topper was a robust, single-shot, break-action shotgun chambered in 10 gauge, designed specifically to handle heavy magnum loads. Manufactured from 1975 to 1986, the Model 176 featured a heavy 36-inch full-choke barrel, making it ideal for long-range waterfowl and turkey hunting in the era before non-toxic shot regulations and the rise of 12-gauge 3 1/2-inch magnums. Like other Topper models, it had an exposed hammer, manual top lever, and automatic extractor, all built into a solid steel receiver. The shotgun was outfitted with a plain hardwood buttstock and forend, designed to manage recoil and endure tough field conditions. As part of H&R’s mission to provide affordable, dependable firearms, the 176 offered hunters the raw power of a 10-gauge without the cost or complexity of repeating shotguns.
