Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The H&R Model 949 — often nicknamed the “Forty-Niner” — is a distinctive, budget-friendly .22-caliber revolver that earned a following for its unusual nine-shot cylinder, straightforward mechanics and solid, old-school construction. Chambered to handle .22 Short, .22 Long and .22 Long Rifle, the 949 typically appears with a 5½-inch (sometimes listed as 5–5.5") barrel and a full-length, blued steel finish with smooth walnut or checkered wooden grips that give it a classically mid-century look and balanced feel at the bench. Mechanically it’s a true double-action/single-action revolver: the DA pull is commonly reported as rather heavy and a bit gritty compared with modern designs, while the single-action break is much crisper — a trait that makes the 949 pleasant for deliberate, aimed fire despite its inexpensive origins. Sights are usually a fixed or adjustable rear with a blade front (many surviving examples feature a windage-adjustable rear sight), and the longer barrel plus nine-shot capacity made the 949 attractive for plinking, recreational range work and small-game practice rather than concealed carry. Like many H&R designs, earlier and later production runs differ in safety details — later “second-model” examples incorporate a transfer-bar ignition/safety system — so condition and exact configuration affect both handling and collector interest. Today the Model 949 is usually treated as a value classic: reliable when fed standard and subsonic .22 ammunition, modestly accurate from the bench, and commonly available on the used market at affordable prices, which keeps it popular with collectors who like quirky revolver designs and shooters who want a nine-shot .22 with vintage character.
