Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Harrington & Richardson Model 865 “Plainsman” is a bolt-action .22-rimfire repeater produced in large numbers from 1949 to 1986, designed as an affordable and dependable small-bore sporting rifle. It was chambered for .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle, fed from a 5-round detachable box magazine, and normally fitted with a 22- or 24-inch round tapered blue barrel and standard iron sights (blade front and an adjustable notch rear). Stocks were typically walnut, pistol-grip style, with some later rifles appearing in lighter-finish hardwood variations and in monte-carlo style. The overall weight remained close to 5 lbs, keeping the rifle easy to handle for both new and experienced shooters. A grooved receiver for scope mounting was commonly provided, offering owners an option for improved accuracy with optics. Combined, these features made the Model 865 Plainsman a long-lived, broadly used utility and sporting rifle that earned a quiet but steady reputation for reliability in the field.
