Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Harrington & Richardson Model 65 Reising is a .22 LR, blowback-operated semi-automatic rifle developed for the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II as a sub-caliber training rifle to teach recruits marksmanship with a weapon that operated like, looked like, and felt like the M1 Garand. Designed by Eugene G. Reising and produced by H&R in Worcester, Massachusetts, the rifle was intended to replicate the handling and sight picture of the M1 Garand while allowing recruits to train with low-recoil, inexpensive ammunition. It featured a heavy 23-inch barrel, a 10-round detachable box magazine, a manual bolt hold-open, and a front blade sight paired with an adjustable aperture rear sight, with overall weight and stock dimensions chosen to mirror the service rifle closely. Collector research confirms that production of the Model 65 occurred between 1943 and 1945, with approximately 6,000 rifles produced under Marine Corps contracts and an overall total of roughly 18,500, including both military and civilian examples. As wartime contracts concluded in 1945, H&R transitioned the Model 65 into a series of civilian-market “Leatherneck” variants — beginning with the Model 165 and later including Models 150 and 151 — which featured lighter stocks, modified sights, and other refinements suited to sporting use rather than military training.
