Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The H&R “The American” is a classic example of early American small-frame revolver design, produced by Harrington & Richardson from the late 19th century into the early 20th century and embodying the utilitarian, reliable wheelgun ethos that made H&R a household name in civilian and law-enforcement circles. Produced in large numbers—approximately 850,000 units across multiple calibers and configurations between about 1883 and 1940—The American was offered chambered in popular centerfire rounds such as .32 S&W, .38 S&W, and even .44, with cylinder capacities and barrel lengths varying according to caliber and intended use. Its solid-frame, double-action mechanism allowed shooters to fire rapidly with a long double-action trigger pull or take advantage of a lighter single-action pull for more deliberate shooting, a versatility valued in an era when many pocket and belt revolvers were still single-action only. The American features simple fixed sights, a robust steel construction, and either round or octagonal barrels, typically ranging from about 2½" to 6", making it suitable for concealed carry, everyday defense, or general shooting. Early examples often wore bright nickel finishes with hard rubber grips, while later versions might be found in classic blued steel, reflecting evolving tastes and manufacturing practices over its decades-long run. As an artifact of American firearms history, The American illustrates H&R’s role in popularizing affordable, dependable revolvers at a time when handguns were transitioning from black-powder to smokeless cartridges, and its surviving examples are prized today by collectors for their historical significance, period character, and tangible connection to an era when small revolvers were a standard personal defense tool
