Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Herbert Schmidt Model 21S is a small, single-action, six-shot revolver made in West Germany (H. Schmidt/Ostheim) and commonly encountered in .22 Long Rifle form—with many examples sold new with an extra .22 Magnum cylinder to give owners a dual-caliber rimfire option—so it reads like an economical, Colt-Peacemaker-style rimfire trainer or pocket revolver rather than a modern duty piece. Externally it wears traditional single-action lines: a right-side loading gate, a loading/ejector rod under the barrel, fixed or dovetailed sights on some runs, and period-correct grip panels that range from simple plastic to faux bone; the small frame and short barrels make it eminently concealable and comfortable for casual plinking or novelty shooting. Construction and materials reflect its budget-oriented roots—many Herbert Schmidt revolvers used economical zinc/aluminum alloy frames with steel cylinders and barrels—so while they’re light and inexpensive, owners are commonly advised to restrict shooting to standard-velocity .22 ammunition and to treat the guns as fun, low-cost shooters rather than heavy-duty service pieces. Functionally the 21S is straightforward and user-friendly: simple single-action timing, easy field maintenance, and forgiving feeding with compatible rimfire ammo (though rimfire sensitivity and occasional quirks in extraction or finish are common on older or well-used examples). Today the Model 21S occupies a niche on the used market—valued by hobbyists and collectors for its novelty, dual-caliber options, and nostalgic styling, but generally priced modestly due to parts scarcity, inconsistent fit/finish across production runs, and the company’s eventual decline—so it’s best appreciated as an inexpensive, shootable piece of postwar German firearm history rather than a precision target revolver
