Hi-Standard launched their Sentinel revolver line in 1955 at the request of Sears Roebuck, a significant customer that held a substantial stake in Hi-Standard. Sears aimed to offer a low-cost "kit gun" or "tackle box" revolver under their J.C. Higgins brand. Sold by Sears as the J.C. Higgins Model 88, featuring distinctive grips, cylinder flutes, and cylinder release pins. In addition, private label versions of the Sentinel were later produced for Western Auto, designated as the Revelation Model 99, and for Armamex, the company founded by Colonel Rex Applegate in Mexico. The Sentinel was a 9-shot revolver chambered in .22 caliber, promoted for its anodized aluminum frame, high-tensile carbon steel barrel and cylinder, single-stroke multiple ejection system, swing-out counterbored cylinder, adjustable square-notched rear sight, non-slip scored trigger, and diamond-checkered grip.
