Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The High Standard “Double-Nine” (W-100/W-102 series) is a distinctly Western-styled, 9-shot .22-caliber revolver that married cowboy aesthetics to economical, everyday rimfire shooting—introduced in the late 1950s as part of High Standard’s effort to offer a nine-shot, swing-out-cylinder handgun with long sight radii and a variety of barrel contours for both target and novelty Western markets. Most Double-Nine examples used an aluminum-alloy frame to keep weight reasonable while offering barrel lengths that ranged from short 3.5-inch “Posse” and 5.5-inch service contours up to very long 9.5-inch “Longhorn” target barrels, and the standard chambering was .22 Long Rifle feeding from a nine-round cylinder—features that made the pistol pleasant for plinking, cowboy-action fun, and informal target work. Mechanically it’s a conventional double-action revolver with a rebounding hammer and a swing-out cylinder for relatively quick reloading; ergonomically the frames were often trimmed with faux stag, white or walnut-style grips and finished in blued or nickel plating to suit the Western image, and High Standard shipped several named trims (Longhorn, Natchez, Posse, Durango, Hombre, Marshal) to appeal to a broad market. On the range, the Double-Nine is praised for its light recoil, long sight radius (on the longer barrels), and forgiving behavior with a wide range of .22 LR loads—although, as with many mid-century imports, prospective buyers should check cylinder timing, extractor function, and overall finish condition when assessing value or reliability. Today, the Double-Nine enjoys a modest collector following: it’s not rare, but specific barrel lengths, named trim packages, and well-preserved finishes command premium prices among Western-style collectors and rimfire enthusiasts, and parts and examples still regularly appear on auction and secondary markets.
