Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Merwin, Hulbert & Co. was a New York–based firearms firm active from the 1870s until the mid-1890s, with manufacturing carried out by Hopkins & Allen in Norwich, Connecticut. After Merwin & Hulbert’s collapse in the 1890s, Hopkins & Allen continued to produce firearms under the Merwin, Hulbert name, including the “Junior” rifle. The Junior was a small single-shot falling-block rifle, most often chambered in .22 rimfire but occasionally found in .32, designed as a light and affordable “boys’ rifle” for target practice, training, and small-game hunting. Though modestly priced, the Junior featured the solid construction, walnut stocks, and simple but serviceable sights that reflected Hopkins & Allen’s reputation for sturdy utility arms. Production continued until Hopkins & Allen itself went bankrupt in 1916, leaving surviving Juniors as representative examples of late 19th- and early 20th-century American rimfire rifles.
