The Uzi is a family of Israeli submachine guns and machine pistols, notable for its open-bolt, blowback-operated design. Developed by Major Uziel "Uzi" Gal in the late 1940s shortly after the establishment of the State of Israel, the Uzi was innovative for its use of a telescoping bolt, which allowed the magazine to be housed within the pistol grip, resulting in a more compact weapon. The Uzi prototype was completed in 1950 and was first introduced to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) special forces in 1954. By 1956, it was adopted for general issue, becoming a vital asset for various branches of the IDF.
