One of the Mag-10’s defining features is its CounterCoil recoil reduction system, which uses gas operation to soften the punishing recoil of heavy 10-gauge magnum loads. While this innovative design reduced shooter fatigue and enabled quicker follow-up shots, it came at the cost of a limited 2-round magazine capacity. Originally produced with longer 32" barrels, jeweled bolts, and engraved receivers, this more compact and modernized version preserves the Mag-10’s hard-hitting legacy while offering improved handling. Though production ended in 1986, when Remington acquired the design and adapted it into the SP-10, the Ithaca Mag-10 remains a favorite among seasoned waterfowl hunters. Following the 1991 federal ban on lead shot for waterfowl, the Mag-10's ability to push large volumes of steel shot made it an invaluable tool for goose hunting—a role it still fulfills for those who appreciate raw power and classic American shotgun engineering.
