Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ithaca Model 51, often referred to as the “Featherlight,” is a 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun introduced by the Ithaca Gun Company in the late 1960s as the company’s attempt to compete in the growing market for modern autoloading shotguns dominated by designs like the Remington 1100. Designed with a gas-operated action, the Model 51 was intended to provide softer recoil and faster follow-up shots compared to traditional pump shotguns, while still maintaining a relatively lightweight and field-friendly profile. It featured a distinctive alloy receiver—hence the “Featherlight” name—paired with a vent-rib barrel commonly seen in hunting configurations, typically 26 or 28 inches in length, making it well suited for upland game and waterfowl hunting. The action used a dual-piston gas system that cycled the bolt assembly, but unlike some more refined contemporaries, the Model 51 developed a reputation for being somewhat sensitive to ammunition selection and maintenance, which could affect reliability in harsh field conditions. Despite this, when properly tuned and fed appropriate loads, it offered a smooth shooting experience with noticeably reduced felt recoil, making it appealing to hunters transitioning from pumps to semi-autos. The shotgun also featured a relatively slim fore-end and classic walnut stock furniture, giving it a traditional aesthetic that contrasted with its modern operating system. Production ran from roughly 1969 into the late 1970s, and while it never achieved the widespread popularity of its competitors, it remains an interesting example of Ithaca’s engineering efforts during a highly competitive era in shotgun development, valued today by collectors and enthusiasts for its unique place in American firearms history.
