Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Iver Johnson “Cadet” is a compact, no-nonsense small-frame revolver that exemplifies the company’s long tradition of producing affordable, rugged handguns for training, casual range use, and home defense in eras when simplicity and economy mattered most. Typically chambered for .22 rimfire cartridges (making it cheap and pleasant to shoot), the Cadet was built with straightforward, easy-to-service internals — a stout steel frame, a simple hammer and sear arrangement, and basic fixed sights — all of which made it friendly for new shooters and parents looking for a durable training piece. Many Cadet examples were finished in blued steel with smooth wood or checkered grips that offered a comfortable, stable hold for target practice; others appear in nickel or plated finishes depending on the production run and market. Mechanically the Cadet favors reliability over complexity: its double-action capability (on many later or common variants) gives a heavier, longer first pull for safe, ready carry while a crisp single-action break rewards deliberate aimed fire, and the uncomplicated extraction/loading system is forgiving to maintain in the field. Over various production years Iver Johnson made several Cadet variants and trim levels, so you’ll see differences in barrel contour, sight style, and safety features between older and newer examples — a fact collectors watch closely when evaluating originality and value. Functionally it shines as a plinker and trainer: low recoil, economical shooting, and a tolerant feed/ignition system mean it gets along with a wide range of .22 loads, though like any vintage firearm buyers should check cylinder timing, lockup, and the condition of the forcing cone and bore. Today the Cadet is appreciated both by vintage-gun collectors for its historical place in mid-20th-century American small arms and by shooters who want a simple, reliable little revolver that’s pleasant to shoot and easy to maintain.
