Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works Safety Automatic Hammer revolver was produced from 1896 to 1941 across three distinct models, each reflecting advancements in design, safety, and materials. A double-/single-action top-break revolver, the Safety Automatic Hammer features a 3-inch solid rib barrel, fixed blade front and notch rear sights for quick alignment and reliable accuracy, and a nickel finish that provides both corrosion resistance and an attractive appearance. The checkered hard rubber grips, adorned with Iver Johnson’s iconic owl head logos, offer a secure hold and a distinctive period look. The Safety Automatic was available in two frame sizes: a small frame chambered for the .32 S&W cartridge, and a larger frame designed to handle the more powerful .38 S&W round. Iver Johnson’s First Model featured a single locking post that interfaced with the top-strap hinge, produced from 1894 to 1895.

The Second Model, produced from 1896 to 1908, improved on this with a stronger double-post setup. Both early models were produced in the hundreds of thousands but were never rated for smokeless powder. The Third Model, nearly identical in appearance to the Second, was reinforced to handle smokeless ammunition. A key distinguishing feature of the Third Model is its use of a coil spring to power the hammer, replacing the earlier flat spring. Additionally, the Third Model’s cylinder locks up when at rest, unlike the freely spinning cylinders of the earlier models when the hammer is not cocked.
