Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
“Manhattan Arms Co.” was not an actual gunmaker but a trade name under which shotguns were imported and retailed, most prominently by the New York firm Schoverling, Daly & Gates (originally Schoverling & Daly, founded in 1865, reorganized in 1873 with the addition of Charles Gates, and active under that name until about 1940). Guns carrying the Manhattan Arms Co. name were sourced from a wide variety of manufacturers in different countries: in Belgium, many were produced by Neumann Frères (up to about 1903) and later by F. Dumoulin; in Germany, by respected firms such as J.P. Sauer & Sohn; and in the United States, by companies like Harrington & Richardson and Hunter Arms Co. Because “Manhattan Arms Co.” functioned as a retail/import brand, its shotguns appeared in a wide array of configurations, including single-barrel models, side-by-side double barrels, both hammer and hammerless actions, and in numerous gauges, barrel lengths, stock styles, finishes, and engraved levels. Surviving examples often bear Belgian or German proof marks or other makers' identifiers, which help modern collectors trace their origins. As a result, the Manhattan Arms name today represents not a uniform product line but rather a diverse collection of imported and contract-built shotguns spanning several decades, countries, and makers.
