Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The J. Stevens / Springfield Model 5100 is a mid-20th-century side-by-side shotgun that embodied Stevens’s pragmatic approach to a workmanlike double-barrel: a solid, hammerless, top-snap action offered in common gauges (12, 16, 20, and even .410 in trade-branded runs) with plain-to-moderate ornamentation and serviceable walnut stocks. Production lineage places the 5100 as the successor to earlier Stevens 5000-type actions and a near-relative of later Model 311 patterns — the basic action type was introduced in the 1930s and continued in various forms through the World War II era and into the 1940s under the Stevens division of Savage. Mechanically, the gun is simple and robust: a traditional break-open, hammerless locking system with a single or double trigger arrangement depending on the run, a solid ribmed barrel set, and an externally-mounted top snap that provides straightforward operation for hunting and field use. The 5100 was built to fill the practical market between cheap department-store specials and ornate side-by-sides — durable, easy to maintain, and affordable — which explains both its historical popularity and its continued presence on the used market. In use, the Stevens/Springfield 5100 is valued as a dependable upland and farm shotgun rather than a high-grade collectible: it points well, cycles simply, and tolerates hard field use, traits that made it a favorite of mail-order and distributor lines in its day. Surviving examples vary widely in finish condition and grade — some present in pleasing case-colored or blued/case-hardened finishes while others are plainly finished working guns — and that variation is reflected in resale values, which tend to be modest but steady depending on bore condition, stock integrity, and mechanical function. For collectors and shooters, the key considerations are condition, originality of barrels and chokes, and whether the gun retains its original furniture and markings; because parts and service for Stevens/Savage shotguns are still reasonably accessible, a good 5100 is an attractive, affordable way to own a classic American side-by-side that handles like the old working guns of the mid-20th century.
