Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this desirable semi-automatic rifle today for a penny-start auction, this is the J. Stevens Arms Co. Springfield 87M!
The Springfield 87M is a rare, military-style variant of the Stevens Model 87 family produced by J. Stevens (by then part of Savage Arms) around the World War II era. Mechanically, it uses the same direct-blowback action and under-barrel tubular magazine as other Model 87 rifles, and it chambers .22 Long Rifle cartridges. The 87M is visually notable for its full-length stock and Garand-style wooden handguard, designed to mimic the look of the U.S. M1 Garand, as well as for the characteristic “gills” cutouts in the receiver found on the 87 series. Although the rifle is often described in collector literature and forums as a Garand-style trainer prototype, there is no documented government contract or military adoption, and no surviving factory record confirming official use. Most accounts estimate production at a few hundred rifles—approximately 300. Surviving examples and at least one verified factory-lettered prototype have appeared in collector sales, confirming the 87M’s authenticity as a limited-production model.
Today, the 87M is seldom encountered in its original configuration, making it a prized collectible. Its limited production, Garand-like styling, and rumored (though unconfirmed) link to military training give it a mystique among rimfire and military firearm collectors as “the .22 that might have been a Garand trainer.”

J. Stevens Arms Company was founded in 1864 in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, as J. Stevens & Co. In 1886, the company name was changed to J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company, under which it operated until about 1920, when it was acquired by Savage Arms Company. Savage continued to produce firearms marked “J. Stevens Arms Company” until the late 1940s, after which it simplified the branding to “Stevens.” The Stevens name remained in use until about 1990, when Savage discontinued the production of Stevens-marked firearms. The “Springfield” name used on these rifles was purely a marketing decision by Savage-Stevens to leverage the popularity of the U.S. military’s Springfield Armory rifles, such as the M1903 Springfield and the M1 Garand; it had no connection to the U.S. government–owned Springfield Armory. The Springfield label was discontinued around 1946–1948. Today, the 87M is seldom encountered in its original configuration, making it a prized collectible.
