Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The J. Stevens Arms Co. Springfield Model 87A is a classic American .22-caliber semi-automatic rifle first introduced in 1938 as part of the Stevens Model 87 family, and ultimately saw over 1.8 million units produced until 1982. It operates on a simple, direct blowback action that is chambered for .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle rimfire cartridges, though only .22 Long Rifle rounds reliably cycle the semi-automatic mechanism. In contrast, the shorter cartridges are typically used in a manual/bolt-action mode. The 87A feeds from a tubular magazine under the barrel, holding approximately 15 rounds of .22 LR, and features a 24-inch barrel with a blade front sight and an adjustable rear sight. One of its most distinctive features is the series of vented slots, or “gills,” cut into the side of the receiver—earning it the nickname “Gill Gun”—which were intended to help clear powder residue and gas from the action, thereby enhancing reliability. Built with smooth hardwood stock and blue finish, the Model 87A was popular for small-game hunting, plinking, and general shooting, noted for its rugged simplicity and versatility among mid-20th-century shooters.
