Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Field Grade production began in 1912 as the lowest grade offered. The 1913 catalog described it as “especially designed for those requiring a sound and plainly finished firearm,” particularly useful in fields and marshes where rough usage is expected. The catalog also noted that its shooting performance equaled that of the higher grades. Featherweights were offered in 12-gauge models weighing as little as 6 1/4 pounds. Field Grade production totaled 199,384—about 82% of all L.C. Smith side-lock shotguns made between 1912 and 1950. The 1913 price was $25; a Hunter One-Trigger raised the price to $45. A gun with ejectors sold for $35, and one with ejectors plus the Hunter One-Trigger retailed for $55. It was available in 12, 16, and 20 gauge and later in .410. Barrels were made from Armor Steel and came in 26-, 28-, 30-, and 32-inch barrel lengths; chokes were bored from cylinder to full to the customer’s order. Stocks were American walnut with full pistol, half pistol, or straight grips. L.C. SMITH was stamped on the lock plates with no engraved artwork.

The right barrel was usually roll-stamped L.C. SMITH FIELD GRADE, and the left barrel sometimes marked THE HUNTER ARMS CO. FULTON, N.Y. The 1939 catalog introduced an improved Field Grade, featuring a revised cocking mechanism, strengthened stock, and reshaped forend. A Field Special—an improved Field Grade with ivory sights and a recoil pad—was listed at $48. By 1945, the regular Field Grade was $65. Production by gauge for the full 1912–1950 period was: 18 ten-gauge, 127,255 twelve-gauge, 38,678 sixteen-gauge, 30,924 twenty-gauge, and 2,509 .410 shotguns.
