Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Lefever Nitro Special, produced by the Ithaca Gun Company from 1921 until the mid-1940s, became one of the most widely distributed American utility-grade double-barrel shotguns of its era. Introduced under the Lefever name after Ithaca acquired the Lefever Arms assets in the mid-1910s, the Nitro Special was a sturdy, uncomplicated boxlock design engineered entirely by Ithaca rather than by Daniel Lefever. It was offered initially in 12, 16, and 20 gauge, with the .410 bore added later in the 1920s, and was designed from the outset for modern smokeless-powder loads. Known for its reliability and modest cost, it appealed strongly to everyday hunters, farmers, and sportsmen. Despite its budget-minded positioning, the shotgun featured solid construction, including a case-colored receiver and fluid-steel barrels, and came standard with extractors and double triggers. Factory-installed automatic ejectors and optional single-trigger configurations were also offered. Unlike the ornate Lefever sidelock shotguns produced before Ithaca’s ownership, the Nitro Special was designed with a focus on strength, practicality, and dependable field performance.

Most examples were offered in straightforward, working-grade configurations with solid walnut stocks; however, Ithaca also produced variants with upgraded wood or tasteful embellishment. Its robust, uncomplicated mechanism and reputation for reliability made it a trusted companion for sportsmen throughout the interwar and Depression years. Rather than pursuing decorative features, the Nitro Special excelled in durability, ease of maintenance, and everyday usefulness, securing its place as one of Ithaca’s most enduring and widely appreciated double-barrel shotguns.
