Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Llama XV is a charming mid-century Spanish semi-automatic rimfire that wears 1911-inspired lines while remaining a distinct, practical little pistol: built around a simple blowback action and an exposed hammer, the XV was typically chambered in .22 Long Rifle and fed from a single-column 10-round magazine, giving it the compact capacity and low recoil that made it popular for training, plinking and casual target work. Introduced in the postwar era and produced in numerous variants through later decades, the XV was offered in both steel and lighter “Airlite” alloy-frame versions, and configurations ranged from plain, short-barrel pocket models to ventilated-rib and target-barrel runs with adjustable rear sights and longer sight radii — features that made some XVs surprisingly capable for precision at modest distances. Externally it deliberately echoes the 1911’s controls and ergonomics (thumb safety, slim grip profile, familiar slide/rail geometry), which gave shooters the tactile feel of a full-size service pistol while enjoying the economy and ease of .22 ammunition; internally it’s straightforward to field-strip, and many examples share a 1911-like takedown feel that made maintenance intuitive for owners moving between familiar handgun types. Fit and finish across production runs vary — ventilated-rib and “Especial” or higher-trim models show nicer machining and better sights, while basic export models prioritized affordability — so condition strongly affects both handling and collector value. On the range the Llama XV is generally praised for a pleasant, predictable trigger and benign recoil that makes follow-ups easy, and its 1911ish controls help new shooters learn proper trigger and grip techniques; downsides to watch for on used examples include worn slide-to-frame fit, failing extractors or magazines, and the usual aging issues with older Spanish imports, but parts and magazines are still reasonably attainable on the secondary market. Today the XV appeals to collectors and rimfire fans who like its combination of vintage styling, practical accuracy and the curious appeal of Spanish gunmaking history — a solid little pistol that’s as comfortable as a trainer as it is a characterful addition to a used-gun shelf.
