Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Manton percussion double-barrel shotgun represents a pinnacle of 19th-century British gunsmithing, reflecting the innovative spirit of the Manton family. Initially renowned for flintlock designs, the Mantons embraced the emerging percussion cap system, improving both the reliability and weather resistance of their firearms. Joseph Manton, the most celebrated member of the family, was a visionary inventor who revolutionized firearm technology with innovations such as the tube or pill lock in 1818—an advancement on Alexander Forsyth’s scent-bottle lock—that provided more reliable ignition in damp conditions and laid the foundation for the modern percussion system. Skilled sportsmen themselves, the family produced roughly 100 weapons annually from the late 18th century onward, including dueling pistols and shotguns. Their double-barreled shotguns, often featuring Damascus barrels and finely engraved lockplates marked “Manton London,” were crafted with meticulous attention to detail, balancing functionality with aesthetic elegance. Joseph Manton was also among the first to align the barrels of double-barreled shotguns parallel to each other, a design now standard in modern firearms.

The Manton family workshop in London was highly influential. John Manton, Joseph’s father, was regarded as one of England’s finest makers, and Joseph’s innovations set a standard for precision and quality that his son, George Henry Manton, and other contemporaries carried forward. Joseph trained several notable gunmakers, including James Purdey, Thomas Boss, William Greener, and Charles Lancaster, many of whom went on to establish their own celebrated firms. Today, Manton percussion double-barreled shotguns are highly prized by collectors for their exceptional craftsmanship, historical significance, and enduring influence on the evolution of sporting firearms.
