Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Marlin Model 1889 is a historically significant lever-action rifle introduced by Marlin in 1889 as an improved successor to the Model 1888. It was the first commercially successful lever gun with a solid-top receiver and side ejection of spent cases, a major innovation that increased strength, safety, and reliability. Marketed as the “New Safety Repeating Rifle,” it incorporated internal safety features such as a locking lug/firing pin system and a cartridge carrier to prevent accidental discharge and jams. The rifle was chambered primarily in .32-20 Winchester, .38-40 WCF, and .44-40 WCF, with very few made in .25-20 Winchester. Standard barrel lengths were 24 inches for rifles and 20 inches for carbines; a handful of special-order shorter and longer barrel lengths were also offered. Built with walnut stocks and blued steel barrels, the Model 1889 exemplifies late-19th-century American craftsmanship. The Marlin Model 1889 lever-action rifle was produced from 1889 until 1895, with additional rifles assembled and shipped from parts on hand through 1903, totaling over 55,000 produced.
