Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Manufactured between 1929 and 1932, the Marlin lever-action shotgun represents a unique and noteworthy venture for the Marlin Firearms Company, as it was one of the company’s few forays into producing shotguns. Based on the well-regarded Model 1893 action, which had been primarily used for Marlin lever-action rifles, this shotgun features several modifications that distinguish it from its rifle counterparts. One of the most notable modifications is the longer loading port, which allowed for easier and more efficient loading of shotgun shells. This change was necessary to accommodate the specific requirements of a shotgun, where cartridges are typically larger and need a more spacious port for quick reloading during field use. In addition to the extended loading port, the shotgun was equipped with a specially designed tube magazine capable of holding five shots.

The magazine was modified to ensure smooth feeding of the .410 shot shells, providing both functionality and reliability for the shooter. The Model 410 lever-action shotgun was chambered specifically for the .410 bore shot shell, one of the smallest shotgun gauges, offering a more compact and less powerful alternative to larger shotguns. This made it ideal for smaller game hunting, as well as for recreational shooting. The shotgun was fitted with a smoothbore barrel, which is characteristic of shotguns, designed for optimal performance when firing shot shells. The barrel was also equipped with an improved cylinder choke, a feature that provides a balanced spread of shot for a variety of shooting scenarios, particularly for close-range shooting, making the shotgun effective for hunting small birds or pests.

While the Marlin Model 410 lever-action shotgun was relatively short-lived, produced only for a few years, it remains a rare and distinctive firearm, particularly valued by collectors. Its innovative design, merging the lever-action rifle's reliability with the unique needs of a shotgun, made it an interesting chapter in Marlin’s history.
