Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Marlin No. 32 Standard 1875 Second Variation revolver is an important early example of American cartridge revolver development and one of the designs attributed to J.M. Marlin during the formative years of what would later become the Marlin Firearms Company. Produced prior to the company’s formal incorporation in 1881, this model reflects the rapid evolution of handgun design following the expiration of the Rollin White patent, which had previously restricted the manufacture of revolvers with bored-through cylinders. Once the patent lapsed, manufacturers across the industry quickly introduced their own rimfire and centerfire cartridge revolvers, and Marlin was among those who capitalized on this opportunity.
 
Typically chambered in .32 rimfire, the No. 32 Standard 1875 Second Variation features a single-action, tip-up design with a compact 3-inch barrel, making it well suited for pocket carry in the late 19th century. Its brass frame and blued barrel and cylinder reflect the materials and manufacturing practices of the era, while fixed sights and checkered hard rubber grips provided basic but functional handling characteristics. Though modest in size and power, this revolver holds considerable historical significance as an early Marlin design and a tangible representation of the transition from percussion arms to self-contained cartridge firearms in the American arms industry.
