Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this historical semi-automatic pistol today for a penny-start auction; this is the Mauser C96 “Red 9”!

This example is a 'Red 9' Mauser C96. Unlike its commercial counterparts, "Red 9" Broomhandles were chambered in the more common 9mm Para caliber, which was used by the German Army and were marked with a large 9 on the grips, which was then filled with red or orange paint to help German soldiers differentiate its caliber from the standard .30 mauser cartridge. Only about 130,000 of these very collectible guns were made, with only about 100,000 being accepted by the army and issued to the troops.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Mauser C96 “Red 9” is a historically significant variant of the iconic C96 semi-automatic pistol, produced by Mauser from 1896 to 1937. The “Red 9” designation refers to a special contract variant chambered in 9mm Parabellum, created for the Imperial German Army during World War I to supplement the limited availability of the standard-issue Luger P08. Approximately 150,000 units were ordered, and about 137,000 were delivered before the end of the war. The name comes from the large red-painted number "9" burned into the wooden grip panels, intended to prevent confusion with the standard 7.63mm Mauser cartridge used in commercial models. These pistols retained the clip-fed, internal 10-round magazine system and featured 9mm-specific sights graduated from 50 to 500 meters, a distinguishing detail from later civilian conversions.

This particular “Red 9” model maintains the classic features of the C96 design, including a distinctive fixed magazine, a long barrel measuring 5½ inches, and a unique integral stock/holster mounting slot on the rear of the frame. It has a blued finish and is outfitted with grooved walnut grips prominently marked with the painted numeral 9. Sought after by collectors, the “Red 9” represents both a technical and historical milestone: it was one of the first semi-automatic pistols widely adopted by a military force and showcased Mauser's innovation during a pivotal period of firearm evolution. Its limited production numbers and wartime use make surviving examples highly prized for their rarity, caliber distinction, and role in early 20th-century military history.
