Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Mitchell Arms / High Standard Trophy II is a precision-built .22 LR semi-automatic target pistol that emerged in the early 1990s as part of Mitchell Arms’ effort to revive the renowned High Standard line of competition pistols. Offered in either polished stainless steel or deep blued finishes, the Trophy II was available with heavy bull barrels around 5½ inches or longer fluted barrels approximately 7¼ inches, giving shooters flexibility for various target disciplines. The pistol features finely checkered hardwood grips, sometimes with thumbrests for enhanced ergonomics, and incorporates fully adjustable rear sights paired with a Patridge-style front sight for precise aiming. The frame and slide are often accented by stippling on the front and rear grip straps, and specific versions came with gold-toned controls such as the trigger, safety, and magazine release. A hallmark of the design is its removable barrel system, which makes cleaning and maintenance easy while also allowing shooters to change barrel types, echoing the functionality of the classic High Standard pistols it was modeled after. As a target-grade firearm, the Trophy II is known for its accuracy when paired with quality ammunition, particularly in the bull barrel configuration, which enhances stability and minimizes muzzle rise. The pistol’s all-steel construction contributes to its balance and recoil control, making it appealing for competitive shooters and enthusiasts alike. Collectors are especially drawn to examples that retain their original finish and grips, with rarer long-barreled or fluted variants often commanding higher interest. Early Trophy II pistols marked with the “High Standard” name before trademark disputes are also considered more desirable by collectors. Today, the Trophy II stands as a distinctive piece that bridges the legacy of the original High Standard target pistols with the craftsmanship of Mitchell Arms’ production era, embodying a period of ambitious revival in American target pistol design.
