Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Moore’s Patent Fire Arms Co. Belt Revolver is a distinctive and innovative percussion revolver from the American Civil War era, produced in the early 1860s by Moore’s Patent Fire Arms Company of Brooklyn, New York. Designed during a period of rapid experimentation in handgun development, the Belt Revolver was notable for its solid-frame construction and side-mounted loading gate, features that set it apart from the more common open-top Colt designs of the time. It was typically chambered in .32 or .36 caliber and used a five-shot cylinder, with a spur trigger and compact profile intended for personal defense. The term “belt revolver” reflected its intended role as a convenient sidearm for civilian carry, officers, and possibly militia use during a time when demand for handguns far exceeded established manufacturers’ output. Today, Moore’s Belt Revolver is valued primarily for its historical significance and mechanical uniqueness rather than sheer firepower or refinement. Production numbers were relatively limited, and the company itself was short-lived, which adds to the revolver’s appeal among collectors of early American firearms. Surviving examples often show heavy wear, making well-preserved specimens especially desirable. To collectors, the Moore’s Patent Belt Revolver represents the ingenuity and urgency of Civil War–era arms production—a tangible example of how smaller manufacturers stepped in to fill gaps during one of the most demanding periods in American firearms history.
