Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Moore’s Patent “Teat-Fire” revolver is an intriguing and mechanically distinctive example of mid-19th century experimentation in cartridge design and breechloading handguns — a pocket-sized, single-action revolver that stood out because it used a purpose-built rimless cartridge with a small protruding primer nipple or “teat” at the base, rather than the rimmed metallic cartridges that would soon dominate the market. In the Teat-Fire system the cartridge’s tiny teat extended through a small hole in the rear of each cylinder chamber so the hammer could strike the protrusion directly and ignite the primer; this clever workaround let manufacturers produce a self-contained metallic cartridge that avoided infringing certain patents of the day and also made conversion from percussion to cartridge simpler for some makers. Externally the revolvers themselves were typically small, pocket or vest models with short barrels, simple fixed sights and blued-steel finishes or nickel plating — practical, no-frills designs intended for civilian personal protection rather than military service — and they commonly featured modest, well-made grips and straightforward single-action mechanics that any shooter of the era could master quickly. Functionally, Teat-Fire revolvers earned a reputation for reliable ignition when loaded with the correct proprietary cartridges and for being easy to load and carry compared with loose-powder percussion guns, but their specialized ammunition and the eventual standardization on rimmed cartridges limited their long-term commercial success; surviving examples are now valued by collectors for their oddball cartridge technology, good 19th-century machining, and the clear snapshot they provide of the transition period between percussion arms and the universal metallic cartridge. Today, Moore’s Teat-Fire pieces are sought after by antique-firearm enthusiasts both for display and as study objects — they illustrate how gunsmiths and innovators temporarily sidestepped patent and technological constraints with clever, if ultimately short-lived, engineering solutions during a fertile time of rapid firearms development.
