Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The O.F. Mossberg & Sons Model 42M(c) is a mid-20th-century bolt-action rimfire training rifle built to be a rugged, serviceable trainer rather than a boutique sporting arm. Originating from Mossberg’s wartime and immediate post-war production runs, the 42M family was widely produced for military and Lend-Lease training contracts (notably for British Home Guard use) and for the civilian market; the “42M” and its subvariants (42M-B, 42M-C, etc.) reflect incremental sight and extractor updates through the 1940s. Mechanically, the rifle is a straightforward .22 S/L/LR bolt action with a 23? sporting barrel, a 7-round detachable box magazine (many examples carried a spare magazine in a butt-trap), and aperture/peep-style rear sights intended to aid marksmanship training. Many examples were issued or supplied with two-piece Mannlicher-style stocks with cheekpiece and sling swivels, and later 42M(c) examples show revised sight fittings (S130/S107 designations in parts lists) and other small updates consistent with post-war production.

On the range, the 42M(c) earned a reputation as a practical trainer and light sporting rifle — steady handling from its relatively heavy 23? barrel, straightforward detachable-magazine feeding, and the receiver peep/dust-cover and barrel-mounted adjustable sights made it well suited to basic marksmanship drills and cadet training. For collectors and buyers today the usual inspection checklist applies: check bore and crown for pitting or throat erosion (many wartime rifles were lightly used or stored), verify magazine feed-lip and follower condition and that the spare-magazine butt-trap (if present) functions correctly, inspect the bolt face/extractor for peening or wear, and examine the stock (especially two-piece Mannlicher types) for repaired cracks around the wrist and trap area. Provenance and contract markings (serial blocks tied to 1941–1943 U.S. government contracts are documented) and included accessories — spare magazines, original slings, dust covers or issued scopes — materially affect value and desirability; when mechanically sound the 42M(c) is both an attractive historic training rifle and a perfectly usable .22 rimfire for light target work or collection display.
