Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, the Empire of Japan relied heavily on the Type 38 rifle as its primary bolt-action service weapon. Officially adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1905—corresponding to the 38th year of the Meiji era, hence the name "Type 38"—this rifle was a refinement of earlier Arisaka designs. It was chambered for the 6.5×50mm Arisaka cartridge, which, while known for its low recoil and flat trajectory, was often criticized for lacking stopping power compared to contemporary military cartridges. Despite this, the Type 38 gained a reputation for ruggedness, reliability, and high build quality. It remained in frontline service throughout the war, even as the more powerful Type 99 rifle, chambered in 7.7×58mm, was introduced in an attempt to modernize Japan’s infantry arms. A shorter variant, the Type 38 carbine, was also adopted concurrently for cavalry, engineers, artillery crews, and other personnel for whom a full-length rifle would be cumbersome.
