Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The National Postal Meter M1 Carbine is a remarkable example of American industrial mobilization during World War II. Originally a maker of metered mailing machines, postal scales, and office equipment, the Rochester, N.Y. company was awarded a contract in 1942 to produce the U.S. military’s new lightweight carbine. Despite lacking the facilities, workforce, and experience to build firearms, National Postal Meter adapted quickly—converting a former automobile showroom into a factory, drawing in engineers and supervisors from across the country, and subcontracting with firms such as the New Haven Clock Company, National Lock Company, and even Trimble Nurseryland Furniture Company, which manufactured stock assemblies and handguards. Between 1942 and 1944, the company successfully produced 413,017 M1 carbines, with its own work focused on key components like the receiver, bolt, operating slide, and trigger housing.

This particular M1 Carbine, serial number 4207025, represents the ingenuity and urgency of wartime production. Featuring an 18-inch barrel, Parkerized finish, smooth wood stock, and semi-automatic action, it carried the same light, reliable design that made the carbine one of the most versatile small arms of the war. Its winged blade front and adjustable rear sights suited both combat and training use, while the .30 Carbine cartridge offered a balance between portability and firepower. Although barrels and many other parts were supplied by subcontractors, National Postal Meter’s contribution underscores how even companies far removed from firearms manufacturing played a vital role in arming America’s soldiers. Today, these carbines stand as both functional historic firearms and tangible reminders of the nation’s collective wartime effort.
